At the age of 65, after intensive treatment for cancer, Vermont writer Howard Frank Mosher set out on a nationwide roadtrip, driving his old Chevy “Loser Cruiser.”  His intent, to publicize his most recent novel, Walking to Gatlinburg, and see a large swath of the America on the way. The Great Northern Express is an account of that journey, during which he visited nearly 200 independent bookstores across the nation. Interspersed between accounts of his visits, he writes about how he came to live in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, and his and his wife’s early days there. The book is full of lively characters, both fictional and real, who have inspired Mosher’s writing for the last 30 years. It is also a paean to the independent bookstore.

The author of 12 books (10 fiction, two memoirs), Howard Frank Mosher has been compared to Mark Twain. One critic credited him with inventing the “Eastern.” Several of his novels, all of which are set in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, have been made into movies. He has won the New England Book Award for Fiction, and has also received the Literature Award of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. He lives in Irasburg, Vermont.
