Jack Beatty | The Lost History of 1914

In this intriguing book, Jack Beatty makes the argument that World War I was not as inevitable as many historians have thought. He claims that if any of a number of events had turned out differently (e.g.if Britain had become embroiled in a civil war brought on by the controversial Home Rule) then WWI might not have happened, or might not have lasted as long. The Lost History of 1914 includes a powerful description of the combat between August 1914 and January 1915 which resulted in one million deaths. The French, English and German people were not aware of the scale suffering because of press censorship.

Jack Beatty is a senior editor of the Atlantic Magazine and analyst for the NPR program  “On Point.”  He won an American Book Award for The Rascal King, his biography of Boston mayor James Michael Curley. He also edited Colossus a prize-winning book on corporations.
