Margot Livesey | The Flight of Gemma Hardy

Margot Livesey has put her considerable talents into re-imagining the timeless Jane Eyre. She sets the story of orphan Gemma Hardy in Scotland during the ‘60s. Gemma moves from Iceland to live in Scotland with her uncle, who dies and leaves her in the clutches of a nasty aunt. Gemma makes her way through school and becomes an au pair in the Orkney Islands. Livesey sticks to the elements of Jane Eyre, including the central romance, and requisite secrets, but her re-imagining of the original is inventive and lyrical. Like the classic, this is a book to fall into and forget the rest of the world for a while.

The Flight of Gemma Hardy is Livesey’s seventh novel. Her most recent, The House on Fortune Street, was praised as “acutely observant.”  A native of Britain, she is currently writer-in-residence at Emerson College and lives in Cambridge, Mass.
