Deep Survival Laurence Gonzales
Part survival handbook, part autobiography, part true adventure drama.
This knowledgeably written, well researched, and easily readable work is a
helpful adjunct for those of us who chose; either by chance or intent, the
emotional, geographical, or physical road less traveled. Someday, in some
crisis, the decisions we make may influence the quality and quantity of our life
to follow. This book analyzes how some survivors made their critical
decisions in life threatening situations.

Thirteen Moons Charles Frazier
I loved this tale from early North Carolina and the mountains. Frazier is a wonderful storyteller and his main character, his life among the Cherokke and his love, Claire, come to life in this rich book.

Special Topics in Calamity Physics Marisha Pessl
Some may call this a "gimmicky" novel (the title, the chapter headings, the copious footnotes). But what really matters is that this girl can write. Some of these phrases knocked me off my seat - not an easy feat nowadays. Smartly written and fun!

Baking: From My House to Yours Dorie Greenspan
This magnificent book kept me mezmerized for one entire Sunday. I hungrily devoured the recipes for Amaretto Torte and Cranberry Lime Galette as well as the many baking tips she offers. The only thing that helped me put it down was the knowledge that I still had time to grab my almond extract, cast iron skillet and all purpose flour to make the Swedish Visiting Cake in time for dinner. I think this book will help even a beginner bake like a pro.

British Mysteries *****
We have two new English mystery writers in the store and I recommend both. The first is Graham Horley and these are police procedurals. His character is a DI in Portsmouth, England; a single father, and a birdwatcher. The fist book is Turnstone.
The second author is Phil Rickman, and his main character is a newly-made female vicar in a small village full of interesting characters, including her surley, but engaging teen-age daughter. The first book is Wine of Angels.
Both have their dark sides, but then they are murder mysteries...

Writing Down the Bones Natalie Goldberg
I can't believe that I never read this book before. How could that be? I've read Anne Lamott's book, the one by Stephen King, and any writing book I could get my hands on. I confess that I only picked this one up initially because of its tiny size, but now I can't put it down. It's so handy that I take it literally everywhere with me. I feel so inspired to write, that I may just fill up our whole store with reviews.Goldberg's classic was published 21 years ago, but this edition has a new preface and an interview with the author. Pair this with one of our little journals and you've got yourself a fabulous present for just about anyone!

Rick Riordan Percy Jackson Series
My nine year old nephew just introduced me to this series. He, a non-reader, has devoured them. I love the mythology and the irreverent narrator. This would be a great series of any kid going to camp, looking for a good summer read, or looking for something to devour while they wait for Harry Potter #7.
