Poetry. "I was riding in a plane from Dublin when I read Michael Brosnan's poem in The Moth. You know when you feel you've found a poet for keeps? At that moment I wondered if he had many books. Turns out, Brosnan had no poetry book. Now he does. Please greet his debut as I did. He's one for the company of others. Welcome this name perhaps you've never heard of but who has been writing poems diligently and publishing in journals for years."--Peter Money

Naomi Shihab Nye calls THE SOVEREIGNTY OF THE ACCIDENTAL a "stunning book...It's as if he found the pulse of poetry," while Eamon Grennan says Michael Brosnan's debut is "an impressive, deeply satisfying debut.

About the Author

Former Associate Editor of Down East magazine and longtime Editor of Independent School magazine, he has published in popular and leading poetry journals of our day including Barrow Street, Beloit, The Moth, New Letters, Prairie Schooner, Rattle. Until now, he had previously published only two books on education: Against the Current: How One School Struggled and Succeeded with At-Risk Teens (Heinemann) and The Inclusive School: A Selection of Writings on Diversity Issues in Independent Schools (NAIS). Brosnan’s poetry makes a mark.

Praise For…

Commuting both as teacher and as learner between worlds, Michael Brosnan maintains a fine balance — as open to the mundane troubles of a teenage student as to that “steady otherness of things” in the accidental world all around us. Keeping a kind of benign, never querulous, questioning mode as his compass and rudder, Brosnan, in this linguistically fresh collection, gently but firmly opens the universe of his own concerns to our understanding, and for our pleasure. His collection is one of palpable and impalpable presences — disparate, colorful, emotionally laden, always sharply apprehended: “the tongue of a vole. The trappings of desire,” or any “fleck of light/ in the fading light.” His is a voice of both musical and intellectual authority, and The Sovereignty of the Accidental is an impressive, deeply satisfying debut.
 — Eamon Grennan

A stunning book — fresh as a crisp wind after days of sluggish weather. Poems which stir language, memory, momentary intense awareness, to give us back the bracing joy of clear thinking. Brosnan writes with a deft, sure hand. How can there be so much potent magic in a single stanza or phrase? It’s as if he found the pulse of poetry.
