Anna Sewell was born on March 30, 1820 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England into a devout Quaker family. Her mother, Mary Wright Sewell, was already a successful author of children's books. Anna was home-schooled until she was twelve. When she was fourteen, she slipped and injured both ankles, causing her to need a crutch to walk or stand for the remainder of her life. As a result, she became dependent on horse-drawn carriages, which added to her affection toward horses. Anna began assisting her mother in the editing of her written works, then spent six years writing "Black Beauty," her only published work to better the treatment of animals. The book was published in 1877, when she was 57 years old, but five months later, at the age of 58, on April 25, 1878, Anna died of hepatitis in Old Catton, Norfolk, England.
