Marcelo Gleiser :: VHC 1st Wednesday Lecture: Physicists’ Dream of a Theory of Everything

marcelo gleiserMarcelo Gleiser will  give the 1st Wednesday Lecture for April in Norwich: "Physicists’ Dream of a Theory of Everything."

Theoretical physicists have long dreamt of a theory of everything that encompasses all particles of matter and their interactions. Dartmouth professor Marcelo Gleiser describes how physics and astronomy contain knowledge of the natural world and how their limitations preclude us from ever getting to a “final” theory.

Gleiser, winner of the prestigious Templeton Award, is the author of several books of popular science including A Tear at the Edge of Creation, The Dancing Universe and The Island of Knowledge. His most recent book is The Simple Beauty of the Unexpected: A Natural Philosopher’s Quest for Trout and the Meaning of Everything that has been described as  “part memoir, part popular science blog, with interludes of closely guided casting in England, Italy, and Iceland.”

Sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council and hosted by the Norwich Public Library and the Norwich Historical Society, the 1st Wed Lectures are free and open to the public. Reservations are not needed.

The Norwich Bookstore will have a selection of Gleiser's books available for purchase and signing.

Marcelo Gleiser has had a passion for science and fishing since he was a boy growing up on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. Now a world-famous theoretical physicist with hundreds of scientific articles and several books of popular science to his credit, he felt it was time to connect with nature in less theoretical ways.

Do all questions have answers? How much can we know about the world? Is there such a thing as an ultimate truth?

To be human is to want to know, but what we are able to observe is only a tiny portion of what's “out there.” In The Island of Knowledge, physicist Marcelo Gleiser traces our search for answers to the most fundamental questions of existence.
